house-carboard-against-skySouthern California has gone through a bizarre and sometimes unfortunate hot-cold winter season this year. The heat has come from unfortunate wildfires in many areas of the state. The cold has been a nippier December than usual, and we can still anticipate more days ahead when heating systems will need to do their jobs. It’s true we don’t tax our heaters as much as homes do in Minnesota, but they still have to function to help us enjoy our lives to the fullest.

Now that it’s 2018, you may want to consider making a major upgrade to your home’s heater. Maybe this means continuing with heating repair in Los Angeles, CA. In many cases, professional repairs are exactly what the HVAC doctor ordered. However, if you have an old furnace, heat pump, or other type of central heater (a system more than 15 years old), we recommend starting the new year with a superior heating system.

What Makes for a Better Heating System?

That’s a good question. And it has a good answer. Actually, several good answers. We can’t give you the exact right answer you’re looking for here on a blog, but we can give you one when you arrange for a heating system replacement with our specialists.

First, if you’re replacing a heating system that’s more than a decade old, it’s easy to provide a better heater because HVAC technology continues to advance. If you’re getting rid of a 15-year-old gas furnace, almost any new system you install in its place will have a higher AFUE (efficiency rating) than the old one. The new furnace will work better than the older furnace did even when it was new.

You can choose some specific improvements in your heating with the new system. In the case of a furnace, you can opt for a special high efficiency model that uses a variable speed fan, multi-stage burners, and sealed combustion. These contribute to a system with greater than 95% AFUE, which is a huge improvement.

If you rely on an electric furnace, we suggest looking into a heat pump installation. Heat pumps drain much less electricity than electric furnaces. However, it’s best to have a heat pump installed if you also plan to change your air conditioning system, since a heat pump works as both a heater and AC. It’s wasteful not to replace both when you put in a heat pump.

We also recommend looking into having zone control put in as part of new installation if you don’t already have it. Zone control permits you to shut off heating (as well as cooling) to parts of the house that don’t need it. This makes a difference when it comes to energy use, and it also allows family members to affect the climate in their own rooms without changing the climate of the entire house.

Older Home Heating Solutions

We’re an older home specialist, which means we know how best to provide heating and cooling to older houses that lack the space for standard HVAC systems and ducts. If you have a vintage home and want better heating, we’re definitely the people you want to work with!

Kilowatt Heating, Air Conditioning and Electrical serves Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley Area.
