We experienced a colder beginning of the year than is usual for Southern California—although many other parts of the country would laugh at what we consider “cold”! If your household is one of the many that uses a natural gas furnace for warmth during the winter, you probably got some serious use from it during January and early February.
But Southern California warms up fast and warms up early. We’re almost to that point of the year when the air conditioning system kicks in and then stays on, while the furnace naps until November.
But you shouldn’t simply stop using the furnace and call it a day. (Or a summer.) A natural gas furnace requires a few steps to properly shut down at the end of cold weather. This will help it stay in good shape and keep your house safe.
Fully turn off the pilot light
You may have an older furnace that uses a standing pilot light to ignite the burners. If you do, then the pilot light should be shut down entirely to avoid energy waste and safety concerns. Look for a handle on the pipe that leads to the pilot light and turn it 90 degrees. This will douse the pilot light and stop the gas flow.
Change the air filter
We hope you’ve kept up with air filter changes during the winter. The filter needs to be swapped for a new one every 1 to 3 months (depending on filter strength) to prevent placing stress on the blower motor and allowing debris to get into the cabinet. When the furnace shuts down for the season, we recommend you put in a new filter so that the air conditioner (which shares the blower motor with the furnace) will have a fresh start.
Call for repairs if anything seems wrong with the furnace
This is key: you should never let the furnace go into hibernation if you suspect that it has a malfunction that requires professional repairs. Not only is there the high risk that the problem will worsen and make the first day of winter heating next season into a nightmare, but there is a potential for gas leaks and other safety hazards.
