As the heat increases during the summer and you run your air conditioning system more and more often, you might begin to notice parts of your house are warmer than you expect. Some rooms are comfortable, but others are turning into hot spots. If this is a new occurrence, it’s often a warning sign you have an air conditioner that needs serious repair work—or may need to be replaced.

We are enjoying a beautiful spring season this year, with clear sunny days and temperatures right in the sweet spot for comfort. True, most of us are enjoying it through the windows of our homes, but it’s still great weather, even for sunny Southern California.

This idyll is also the time to schedule an HVAC tune-up to prepare for the hot weather that’s not far off. California never gets summer breaks from summer weather. Regular spring maintenance is an essential job to make summer as trouble-free as possible for your home cooling, and also as inexpensive as possible.

Summer Power Outages and Whole-House Generators

Monday, July 15th, 2019

When you think of backup generators for homes, do you usually imagine houses on the East Coast during frigid winters or when enormous storms and hurricanes strike? Unfortunately, here in Southern California, we have some pretty good reasons to have generators installed for our homes as well.

Last summer, Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley experienced extreme heat levels and a record-breaking demand for electricity. Homes use more electrical power than ever before, and when this was combined with the heat, it resulted in multiple power outages that lasted for hours and sometimes longer.

Saving Energy in These Mild California Winters

Monday, November 19th, 2018

If you go searching around the internet, you can easily find tips for how to conserve energy during winter weather. But in Southern California, the situation is different. We have some of the mildest winters in the Continental US. Heating systems sometimes need to come on, but they don’t run every day for hours at a time.

Deb is always ready with a warm smile and some good advice about saving energy.

When it comes to saving energy, you need different strategies than “put in storm windows” (we don’t have storm windows). Deb has some tips for cutting down on your energy use in our climate.

The Ductless Mini Split and the Older Home

Monday, June 26th, 2017

At Kilowatt, we’re proud to be Older Home Specialists. This means we’re skilled at figuring out how to provide great heating and cooling for homes built in a time before central comfort systems were common. People who live in these types of houses often imagine that there isn’t any effective way to have quality comfort, and they instead depend on window air conditioning units during the summer and space heaters during the winter.

It doesn’t have to be this way! As Older Home Specialists, we can help you enjoy better comfort around the year without wasting energy or making extensive—and damaging—changes to your house. One of the best tools we have when it comes to helping older homes with year-round comfort is the ductless mini split heat pump.

Humidifiers and Dehumidifiers for Spring

Monday, April 17th, 2017

*Kilowatt Heating, Air Conditioning and Electrical no longer services whole-home humidifiers. For a full list of our indoor air quality services, please visit our website.

blonde-woman-and-fanThe temperatures in Southern California haven’t reached summer levels yet, although we’ve experienced a sprinkling of days above 85°F (hotter if you live farther inland). This is a time when we encourage all of our customers to prep their home cooling systems for the mid-year heat waves. It’s something we’ve brought up in recent posts, and whether you need to schedule regular air conditioning maintenance or you know it’s time to have a new AC system installed, now is the ideal time to act.

Today we want to focus on a factor, aside from the heat, that affects indoor comfort: humidity levels. The Los Angeles and San Fernando Valley areas swing between different humidity levels through spring and summer, and extremes on both ends aren’t enjoyable. But we offer solutions: installing a whole-house dehumidifier and/or humidifier.

Monday, February 6th, 2017

air-conditioning-unitsSouthern California just passed through a patch of rainy and cold days, but now the sun is out again and temperatures are climbing. It won’t be long before we start into the steady warm period, followed by the hot summer.

Right now, when there are still a few cooler days (and maybe some rain) ahead, is the best time to arrange for your annual air conditioning maintenance visit from one of our experienced HVAC technicians. We recommend that all our customers sign up for our HVAC maintenance program, which also includes service in the fall for your heater.

Reason Why Ductless Heating (And Cooling) Is Beneficial

Monday, December 19th, 2016

img_3361It wasn’t long ago that the idea of providing central heating and cooling to a home without using ductwork was unthinkable. Even if you didn’t have a heating system that used ducts, there was still the AC. Unless you wanted to use window units—not an attractive or effective alternative—your home needed extensive ductwork for central comfort.

But the increasing popularity of ductless mini split systems has changed this. If you are looking for a way to heat and cool your home without needing and inch of ductwork, this is the choice for you. Plus, ductless mini splits offer a number of terrific advantages:
