Ductless mini-splits can be a great option for many homeowners in Los Angeles, but there can be some confusion about how the systems provide both heating and cooling. We’ll explain more about that below, as well as discuss other benefits ductless systems can offer. A professional mini-split installation is a necessity, so if you are ready to install a new HVAC system, call the people you can count on: Kilowatt.
Ductless Heating and Cooling
Simply put, a ductless system can offer both heating and cooling due to heat pump technology. The outdoor unit, which houses the compressor and condenser, has an additional component: a reversing valve. This valve can change the flow of the refrigerant in the system, which is the mechanism for switching between heating and cooling modes.
Components of a Ductless System
As mentioned above, there is an outdoor unit, and air is delivered through the indoor blowers. The blowers are connected to the outdoor unit (generally 4 blowers per outdoor unit) via a small conduit which runs through an interior wall; the conduit contains a refrigerant line, condensate drain pipe and a power cord. The blowers can be mounted flush against walls and/or hung from ceilings.
Benefits of a Ductless System
As we discussed above, one of the benefits of a ductless system is its ability to provide both heating and cooling. But there are other benefits a ductless system can offer that are worth considering:
- Zoned cooling and heating – each individual air blower operates independently. This allows for zoned heating and cooling, including the ability to turn off heating to unoccupied areas of your home.
- Energy efficiency – ductwork can lose a lot of air when not well-maintained; with a ductless system, this won’t ever be a problem. In addition, the independent operation of the blowers allows you to use only the heating and cooling you need, which can save energy.
- Great for limited space or expansions – whether your home has limited space for heating and cooling equipment, or you are looking at expanding, a ductless air conditioning system has the flexibility to handle both scenarios.
Ductless systems can be great for older homes that do not have ductwork, or for people looking to have the convenience heat pump technology offers. Interested in a mini-split for your Los Angeles property? Call Kilowatt today!
