Southern California just passed through a patch of rainy and cold days, but now the sun is out again and temperatures are climbing. It won’t be long before we start into the steady warm period, followed by the hot summer.
Right now, when there are still a few cooler days (and maybe some rain) ahead, is the best time to arrange for your annual air conditioning maintenance visit from one of our experienced HVAC technicians. We recommend that all our customers sign up for our HVAC maintenance program, which also includes service in the fall for your heater.
Why Air Conditioning Maintenance Is Important
There are many ways that maintenance pays you back and improves the performance of your air conditioning system.
- First, it eliminates the majority of repair problems your air conditioner might have. In fact, around 80% of the malfunctions that can occur with an AC are avoidable thanks to maintenance. For example, during maintenance a technician might find that refrigerant pressure is low. The technician will check if the refrigerant needs to be recharged, and recharge it if necessary. If this problem were left unattended, it could result in major damage to the compressor.
- Second, maintenance allows an air conditioner to have a long service life. Most modern ACs have an estimated manufacturer’s lifespan of between 10 to 15 years. But an AC won’t even make it to half that unless it has routine cleaning, inspections, and tune-ups. To continue with the above example, a lowered amount of refrigerant can lead to the compressor overheating and burning out. A burnt-out compressor is usually the end of the line for the whole air conditioning system!
- Third, thanks to maintenance, an air conditioning system will keep the promise of its efficiency rating. The efficiency rating for ACs is measured as SEER, or seasonal energy efficiency ratio. But each year that an air conditioning system isn’t maintained will cause the accumulation of wear and tear and dirt to lower the efficiency by around 5%. So in a few years, an energy-saving 20 SEER air conditioner will be operating like a 15 SEER air conditioner—meaning you’ll be paying a lot more to run it.
- Fourth, you’ll receive peace of mind thanks to routine maintenance. Summers here in Southern California can be extraordinarily hot, and the heat levels put immense amounts of strain on cooling systems. If your AC received its annual tune-up before the heat wave, you’ll feel confident that it won’t abruptly break down on you when you need it the most!
