A Few Basic Air Conditioning Troubleshooting Tips

During a hot California summer season, one of the worst troubles you might encounter in your home is a failed air conditioner. Perhaps the system is running, but only room temperature air is coming from the vents. Or maybe the AC won’t turn on at all. Either way, it’s a serious comfort emergency and one you need to have solved as soon as possible.

The best way to fix a broken cooling system is to call on experienced HVAC professionals. However, there some ways to troubleshoot the problem to see if there is a simple error that can be quickly remedied:

If only warm air is coming from the AC…

  • Check the thermostat. Something as basic as an incorrect setting or program can cause an air conditioner to shut off its compressor and stop cooling a home.
  • Look around the outdoor cabinet to see that something isn’t blocking it. Remove any obstructions.

If the air conditioning system won’t turn on at all…

  • You’ll also need to check the thermostat, since incorrect settings can lead to an air conditioner that won’t turn on.
  • Look to see if any of the circuit breakers have been tripped. Because air conditioners draw on a great deal of electrical power when they start up, they can occasionally place too much demand on the circuits and cause one of them to trip. If this is the case, reset the circuit and see if the AC will turn on. If it trips the breaker again, then it’s likely the system has an electrical fault and will need professional repairs.

If you cannot resolve the problem with the above steps, don’t make any further attempts to fix the AC. These are complex machines, and diagnosing and repairing them takes professional training. Call on the experts and let them handle it from here on.
