How a 15+ Year-Old AC Can Have Trouble This Summer

Old AC Unit

How old is your air conditioning system? You can find out without much difficulty. Look at the information plate located on the back of the condenser cabinet and you’ll see a “manufacture date.” If you don’t, write down the model and serial number, then go to the manufacturer’s website where you can input the information to learn the unit’s age.

If your air conditioning system is more than 15 years old, we have some important news for you: it’s time to have a new AC installation in Valley Village, CA. Although a central air conditioner can work for 15 years, most don’t last far beyond this and experience many problems that damage efficiency, create cooling troubles, rack up repair bills, and leave their owners stuck with a non-working system on the hottest days of the year.

To help you understand why we recommend scheduling a new air conditioning installation before the worst of the summer heat arrives, here are a few ways a 15+ year-old AC can give you problems.

Declining energy efficiency

When an AC has regular annual maintenance, it will only lose about 5% of its efficiency until it comes to the last one or two years of its service life. An air conditioner that’s more than 15 years old will usually begin to experience a steep drop in overall efficiency as its wears down past the point where maintenance can do much. You can expect to pay much more to run an aging AC. A new unit gives you a fresh start—and probably with better energy efficiency than your current system had when it was new.

Too many repairs

Any mechanical device that gets old enough will need to have more frequent repair work to keep it operating. For small devices, the repair costs may be inconsequential. For a powerful appliance like an air conditioner, the costs will usually be too expensive to be worth it. We don’t recommend you pay more than $500 a year to keep an old AC running or pay any repair that’s more than half the cost of a new system.

Poor indoor air quality

An old AC can have a negative effect on the quality of the air it circulates through your house. The accumulation of dust and dirt will end up in the air, and the AC may also start letting indoor humidity increase.

Abrupt system breakdown

The worst worry with an air conditioning system that’s over the hill is that it can crash at the bottom of the hill and stop working entirely—often without warning. Maintenance can only do so much with a system that’s more than 15 years old, and you take a big chance heading into a hot summer in Southern California with an AC this old. You don’t want to get trapped with a busted air conditioner on a hot day, and when an AC this old breaks, repairs may not be able to fix it. You’ll be without cooling until technicians can install a new system. We don’t recommend taking this risk!
