duct-sealIf you have a central air conditioning system for your home, you expect it to spread cooling evenly through your home. That’s what a central AC is designed for, after all. But what if you notice that some rooms are much hotter than others? This uneven cooling is often a warning sign that the air conditioner is struggling to do its job. But that’s not the only possibility. We’ll take a look at what might be behind the mystery “hot spots” in your home this summer.

  • Aging air conditioner: When an AC gets too long in the tooth, it will have a hard time keeping up the way it used to in the good ‘ol days. You may notice the hot rooms are the ones farthest removed along the ventilation system. If you air conditioner is over 15 years old, this is probably the cause of the uneven heating, but we recommend that call us for a professional opinion on whether it’s time to replace the system or attempt a repair instead.
  • Clogged air filter: Here’s trouble that you can avoid by regularly changing or cleaning the air filter. The filter will need to be changed/cleaned every 1 to 6 months, depending on the type of filter.
  • Air duct leaks: The trouble with the hot rooms may be due to damage along the ducts leading to them. It doesn’t take a large hole in ductwork to start to allow the cooled air to escape, leading to much warmer air entering the room. To fix this, call on our duct sealing professionals, since this isn’t something you can tackle on your own using duct tape!
  • Problems with room insulation: Finally, the room might be hot because it lacks proper insulation from the outside heat. Check to make sure that there aren’t any cracks or spaces around the windows that are allowing more heat into the room.
