“Should I Keep My AC on During the Day When I’m Not Home?”

Screen Shot 2016-04-11 at 11.47.28 AMThis is one of the most common questions we get from our customers. Naturally, homeowners want to save as much money they can, and energy costs suck up a pretty significant portion of our income. So it is better to turn off the AC while away, or should you keep in on all day?

This is tough, as we know some of our summer days can reach the 90’s or higher, subjecting you and your family to a stifling hot house when you get home at the end of the day. Many people believe that leaving the air conditioner on at all times is the best way to save money. So what’s the answer?

Adjust the Thermostat

If you keep your cooling system on all day, you aren’t using it efficiently as you are using a higher amount of energy. By cooling unoccupied space, you are shortening the lifespan of your AC and actually could be causing damage to the system as well.

However, understandably if you don’t have your AC on while you’re gone, then when you come home your house might be unbearably comfortable. You could waste more energy and money by blasting the AC at the end of the day, to not even reach the cooler temperature you desire. The key here is to adjust the thermostat.

Rather than shutting your system off for the day, adjust your thermostat by about 8-10 degrees. On a 90 degree day, you’ll feel a lot more comfortable returning to a home that’s set at 78 degrees rather than a home with no cooling at all.

Another option is to install a programmable thermostat. This type of thermostat lets you set your desired temperatures for when you are home, when you are away, and when you are sleeping. This is the best way to ensure that you are efficiently cooling your home.
