How to Choose an Air Conditioner

It’s starting to get hot out there—do you have the right air conditioner for your residential or commercial space? Whether you’re starting out from scratch with a cooling system for your brand new building or your existing air conditioner is ready to retire, it’s imperative that you find the right system for you. But what does that mean? And what are your options? There are a number of factors to consider when making a decision as to what type of AC would work best for your home.

In today’s post, we’d like to break it down in further detail.

  • The Importance of Size. If you’re considering a new AC, then it’s imperative that you have a system whose cooling capacity matches the size of your indoor living space. This metric is typically denoted by British Thermal Units (BTUs). For proper performance and energy efficiency, your AC should be just right, neither too large nor small. Over or undersized systems simply will not work according to manufacturer’s instructions, and they may be subject to increased wear and tear over time.
  • Ducts or Ductless. Another decision that you need to make is between a duct based system and a ductless system. Do you want ducts? Do you already have them? If indoor air quality and energy efficiency are important to you, then a ductless air conditioning system (also known as a ductless mini split) may be a more appropriate choice for your home. These devices use multiple indoor air handlers directly within the living space, thus removing the intermediary between you and your cool air.
  • Year-round Comfort or Dedicated Cooling. When you’re having a new AC installed at your home, you may also want to consider whether to install a year-round system such as a ductless mini split or heat pump, or to opt for a dedicated cooling machine such as central air. There are advantages to both, but considering our relatively mild winter, heat pump technology may be the way to go.
